An amphiphilic ingredient built from amino acids (glutamic acid and lysine) and coconut-derived fatty acids. It blends oil and water at very low levels and conditions the feel of the stratum corneum

A gemini-type structure with two hydrophobic chains and three hydrophilic groups, in which one lauroyl glutamic acid is bound to each of the two amino groups of lysine (structural formula in the JCIA labelling-name list, X = Na or H). In a cultured human skin model it retained a water-soluble compound in the skin while increasing its penetration flux

The supplier's public technical leaflet recommends 0.3% of the raw material (0.1% solids) for skin care and 0.3-1.0% (0.03-0.1% solids) for emulsifying/dispersing. No public authority use-concentration survey (e.g. CIR) has been confirmed

Because it behaves as a surfactant, irritation potential must be judged by level of use and the whole formulation. A CIR safety assessment has not been confirmed. An Australian AICIS public report (STD1595) was found to exist but its text could not be retrieved. The supplier describes penetration into the stratum corneum and ceramide-like behaviour in its own literature, which is not peer reviewed
